University of Greifswald

The University of Greifswald (“Alma Mater Gryphiswaldensis“) was founded in 1456 and is considered as one of the oldest academic institutions in Europe. Currently, over 10,000 students from all over the world benefit from a modern academic and research network in a time-honored environment. The members of the University´s community engage in interdisciplinary collaborations across faculties, universities and enterprises, and aim for excellence in both, research and teaching. Life sciences with a focus on cell- and molecular biology, microbiology, infection biology, and biomathematics constitute one of the focal research areas. The scientific performance of the university is likewise expressed by several coordinated multidisciplinary research programs funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), such as the Research Training Groups (DFG-RTGs) for young scientists, or the Federal Excellence Initiative of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania and European Social Fund (ESF).

Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut
Federal Research Institute for Animal Health

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI), is an independent higher Federal authority under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). The FLI performs research concerning infectious diseases of animals, animal genetics, animal nutrition and animal welfare and husbandry. Furthermore it is the national reference laboratory for all infectious diseases of animals including zoonoses, which are notifiable or reportable. At the international level, it fulfils numerous functions within the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Today, it encompasses 12 research departments at five sites. The headquarter is located on the Insel Riems, Greifswald, Germany.

Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg

The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg is an academically independent institution sponsored by the Stiftung Alfried Krupp Kolleg Greifswald. The Institute is intended to assist outstanding research and realize projects in interdisciplinary and international co-operation. The Academic Director is responsible for its academic programme. The initiative to establish the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg came from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung, Professor Dr. h. c. mult. Berthold Beitz. Professor Beitz associated this initiative with the idea that an institute for advanced study in the Hanseatic and University city of Greifswald could assist Greifswald to become once again the "liberal, cosmopolitan centre for encounters in the Baltic Sea region" that it used to be for centuries. The Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg is committed to this goal and  Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach's conviction that it is "a moral duty to enable one's neighbours to participate actively in the progress of knowledge". The academic programme of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg is made possible by financial support provided by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung.
